Mohamed S. El-Aasser is the vice president
for international affairs at Lehigh University, where he helps
oversee Lehigh’s efforts to become an international university.
Before he was appointed to this position in 2009, he was
Lehigh’s provost and vice president for academic affairs.
He came to Lehigh as postdoctoral fellow in 1972, joined the
faculty as professor of chemical engineering in 1974, and has
served as director of the Emulsion Polymers Institute, Lee
Iacocca Professor of Engineering, chair of the Department of
Chemical Engineering, and dean of the P.C. Rossin College of
Engineering and Applied Science.
At Lehigh, El-Aasser led the creation of several
interdisciplinary research centers and creative education
programs, such the Center for Polymer Science and Engineering,
which offers master’s and doctoral degrees; a National Science
Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on
Polymer Interfaces; and bachelor’s degree programs in integrated
business and engineering, computer science and business, and
bioengineering.
El-Aasser is an expert in the field of polymer colloids and
emulsion polymerization processes. He pioneered an area of
research known as “Miniemulsions” (he coined the term in 1980).
He has advised 65 and co-advised 32 Ph.D. students, and also
advised 53 M.S. students and 31 postdoctoral fellows. He and his
students have authored more than 400 scientific articles. He
holds nine U.S. patents and has published five edited books.
Long a leader in the international science field, El-Aasser has
served as a member and adviser of numerous groups, most recently
as the co-chairman of the Engineering Foundation Conference on
Polymer Colloids in Germany (2002) and a member of the Malaysian
Rubber Board’s Scientific & Economic Advisory Committee (2010 –
2015).
El-Aasser received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the
University of Alexandria, Egypt, and a Ph.D. from McGill
University, Canada. He has received numerous awards, including
the 2007 Fellow of the American Chemical Society’s Division of
Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering, Lehigh University’s
1999 Hillman Extraordinary Service Award, and the 1985 NASA
Inventor of the Year Award (shared).
